– full programme and useful information –

Wednesday, July 5, marks the start of Gărâna Jazz Festival 2023! Prepared with a rich and carefully crafted line-up, we expect the music-loving public to take part, for 5 days, in the most intense jazz event of the year. The two stages of the festival, the main stage in Poiana Lupului and the Experimental Stage Empowered by UniCredit Bank at the Catholic Church in the village of Văliug, will host more than 80 talented and virtuoso musicians from 18 countries.

The musical route that the audience will follow until the last concert of the festival, by the long-awaited Anouar Brahem Quartet, touches on the most exciting areas of jazz today. The summer jazz adventure kicks off with an evening dedicated to musicians from Poland, continuing last year’s tradition. In collaboration with the Zbigniew Seifert Foundation, Seifert Night at Gărâna Jazz Festival will take place in Poiana Lupului on Wednesday 5 July 2023. Leszek Możdżer, Marcin Wasilewski Trio and Marcin Pater Trio will bring to the stage the strong essences of Polish jazz.

The next four days of the festival will cross jazz-rock, funk, fusion, world music, Nordic jazz landscapes with Blazzaj, Austrian Syndicate, Paul Zauner Quartet, Per Mathisen & Jan Gunnar Hoff feat Nguyên Lê & Gary Husband, JazzyBIT, Julian & Roman Wasserfuhr feat Jörg Brinkmann, Enzo Favata – The Crossing, Daniel Herskedal Trio and The Side Effects – Stian Carstensen, Marius Neset, Thomas Strønen.

From Friday to Sunday, the Experimental Stage Empowered by UniCredit Bank at the Catholic Church in the village of Văliug will set the starting time for the trail at 11:00 with 7th SENSE and Marquis Noir. Saturday, 8 July, pianist Vasil Hadžimanov will perform a solo recital, followed by Răzvan Cipcă Trio. Sunday, 9 July, the extraordinary recital of tuba maestro Michel Godard will be followed by the equally enchanting concert of Marta Popovici.

The Gărâna expedition will also reach the generous area of vocal jazz, where you will discover a range of charismatic musicians with impressive vocal qualities. Rebekka Bakken, Sinikka Langeland, Nataša Mirković, Camille Bertault and Dean Bowman are exceptional vocalists, supported in their explorations by artists of the calibre of Bendik Hofseth, Markku Ounaskari, Michel Godard, Luciano Biondini, David Helbock and Vasil Hadžimanov. Saxophonist Oded Tzur‘s quartet seems to be a departure from this pattern, but his instrumental voice is sure to win you over.

If you have not yet purchased tickets for the festival, you can still do so online at bilete.ro/garana-jazz-festival-editia-xxvii/ or in Inmedio & RELAY, Germanos, Vodafone and Romanian Post Offices. Tickets will also be available on site, at the access point in Poiana Lupului, from Wednesday, starting at 15.00, in three versions: one-day ticket – at the price of 140 lei, subscription for the whole festival period – at the price of 650 lei and 4-day subscription (Thursday – Sunday) – 520 lei. Children under 14 have free entry.

Useful information

The Gărâna Jazz Festival can be reached by car from Reșița or from Slatina-Timiș, both roads being in good condition.

Some of the most popular campsites are Gărâna Camping and 3 Ape. The weather forecast for the five days of the festival indicates temperatures of 20-24 degrees during the day and showers. After sunset, temperatures can drop below 15 degrees. That’s why thick clothes, boots, raincoats or umbrellas should not be missing from your festival bag.

Small children are welcome at the festival. We recommend that children wear earphones and sit further away from the stage so that they are not affected by the high sound level during the concerts. People who come with dogs must not let them loose and too close to the stage, where the noise can also affect them.

Recommendations

At the Gărâna Jazz Festival, in the mornings and evenings you have a ready-made programme, but during the day you have to improvise. We recommend 5 “improvisation themes”: discover the beauty of the village of Gărâna and the local gastronomy. Goulash and strudel are famous here!

Explore the forests in the area: to the Semenic ridge or around the Gozna and Breazova in Văliug; to reach the highest mountain peaks in the area – Semenic Peak and Piatra Goznei Peak; to sunbathe and bathe in the specially arranged places at the 3 Ape resort (Brebu Nou) or at Ponton – Casa Baraj (Văliug). If you are passionate about mountain biking, the Văliug – Semenic – Gărâna – Brebu Nou area has many trails to choose from.

More information about the programme, invited musicians, transport possibilities in the area, accommodation or camping is available on www.garana-jazz.ro.
