STANLEY CLARKE BAND, SLY & ROBBIE with NILS PETTER MOLVÆR, EIVIND AARSET & VLADISLAV DELAY AND AVISHAI COHEN COMPLETE THE LINEUP OF GARANA JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018

Garana Jazz Festival 22 is happy to announce the presence of new artists on the stages of the festival that will take place 12-15 July 2018 in Wolf’s Meadow, Garana, Romania. The organizers decided, once again, to meet the varied preference of jazz fans by putting together a line-up of Grammy winners and nominees, as well as winners of other prestigious European awards, alongside Romanian musicians with successful national and international projects. The same organizers are hopeful that each member of the audience will find joy, relaxation intense emotions and unforgettable moments within the proposed stylistic and cultural diversity.

These are the artists that have already confirmed their presence at Garana Jazz Festival.

Stanley Clarke Band (USA)

With a career spanning 40 years, 4 Grammies, over 20 solo albums and tens of others as co-leader and sideman, Stanley Clarke is truly a living legend among jazz musicians. Stanley Clarke revolutionized bass playing technique, turning it from a support instrument into a complete solo one. He returns to Garana Jazz Festival with a band of exceptional young musicians – Beka Gochiashvili on piano, Caleb Sean McCampbell on keyboards and voice and Shariq Tucker on drums.

Sly & Robbie with Nils Petter Molvær, Eivind Aarset, Vladislav Delay (Jamaica, Norway, Finland)

Two legendary stars of reggae music, Sly & Robbie, will be star guests of the festival! Their innovative project, Nordub, includes Norwegian musicians Nils Petter Molvær – on trumpet and Eivind Aarset – on electric guitar, as well as Vladislav Delay – a much appreciated Finnish electronic music artist. The give musicians manage to break the boundaries of their genres to create unique sounds, mixing a large ranges of rhythms, from reggae to electronic, sub, nu jazz and world music.

Avishai Cohen’s Big Vicious (Israel)

Extravagant, lyrical, rebellious and contemplative, the versatile Israeli trumpet player Avishai Cohen has already been, for many years, an amazing presence on the international jazz scene. He is considered one of the best trumpet players of our time.  At Garana Jazz Festival he will present a project that seems tailor-made for the audience of the festival: a exciting and harmonious combination of jazz, rock&roll, groove and psychedelic. Big Vicious is a project started by Avishai Cohen some years ago in New York – a non-standard ensemble with two drummers, two guitar players and a leader, giving the artists a great freedom of expression and interaction.

The artists joining Avishai Cohen are guitar players Yonatan Albalak and Uzi Ramirez and drummers Ziv Ravitz and Aviv Cohen.

The 100% Indian Project Ekalavya is a special event for the main stage of the festival.  Indian violinist Abhijith PS Nair and the new star of India, young bass player Mohini Dey, will bring on stage the colors and stories of India. They will mix funk jazz, world music and classical Carnatic music from the south of India in an electrifying show, infused with oriental harmonies. The two representatives of the new wave of Indian jazz will play together with Sandeep Mohan, Joe Johnson și Arun Roop.

Pink Freud (Poland), after 20 years of active creativity, is considered one of the most original voices in contemporary jazz. Their music, mainly a fusion of jazz, punk and rock, has conquered audiences, especially the younger members. Bandleader Wojtek Mazolewski, well-known to the Garana audience for this amazing show with this own quartet in 2016, was a contributor to the generational change in his native country, bringing jazz back in the spotlight. Pink Freud continues to change tastes and attract new fans, in part due to the freshness of their compositions and their energizing style, always in tune with the audience. Together with Wojtek Mazolewski on guitar, Pink Freud are Adam Milwiw-Baron on trumpet, Rafal Klimczuk on drums and Karol Gola on baritone sax.

Elena Mîndru Finnection & Adam Bałdych

Polish violinist Adam Bałdych is the special guest of Elenei Mîndru’s band that won over the Garana Jazz Festival audience in 2014 – Elena Mîndru Finnection. With this new project, the singer invites the listener on an exotic musical journey alongside an acoustic jazz quartet that also includes the violin, an instrument that brings a distinctive and special element to their music. The concert will mainly showcase Elena’s compositions. Their music is an original combination of jazz with traditional Romanian elements.

The line-up is rounded with valuable names of the Romanian and international jazz world. Pianist Mircea Tiberian will present the project La Classe operaia va in Paradiso alongside Claudio Puntin, Daniel Erdmann, Chris Dahlgren and Tilo Weber.

Moldavian ethno-jazz bands Trigon and Alex Calancea Band will perform on the La Răscruce Inn stage. There will also be concerts by Benny Rietveld Trio feat. Marcel Moldovan, Timisoara Exit Oz musicians, Horea Crișovan and Teodor Pop.

The concerts will take place on the main stage of the festival in Wolf’s Meadow (in the evening, after 7pm) in the courtyard of the La Răscruce Inn (during the day, after 2 pm) and in the Catholic Church in Valiug village (from 11 am).

The daily stage program will be announced later, after the line-up is finalised.
